Earlier this summer I was asked to have an exhibit of my work at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, NY. (www.slatevalleymuseum.org) It was an honor to be asked to have a selection of paintings for an event which was scheduled in early October. I began working on several paintings with a strong focus of the area, including some paintings of the old slate quarries which dot the hillsides in this particular region of Vermont. To some these expanses of rocks are just that, piles and piles of rocks and scrap leftover from a time when slate was a very common material in the building industry. I look at these piles of rocks and see interesting colors, light patterns and in the case of this painting, some amazing reflections in the quarry ponds. When I was asked to participate, I had no idea that I would find so much material from which to work. I am always amazed that the best paintings are often found within a few moments from home. The museum sustained some significant damage from hurricane Irene, but they were repaired and ready to go by the opening in October. The opening event held a very celebratory atmosphere and I am very proud to have been a part. Recently, I submitted this painting for the 128th Annual Member's Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club NYC. This painting was awarded the Arthur T. Hill Memorial Award for a landscape by an artist under the age of 45.

The Gentle Arrival of Autumn

It seems this will be a year where we slowly ease into the autumn season. Hopefully it will last for a good while this year! The area and this pond was a recent discovery after a morning of pancakes and maple syrup at our favorite local sugar house. Not sure which I enjoyed more, the pancakes of finding this beautiful location.

I find this somewhat of a challenging post. With the destruction of so much of Vermont, after hurricane or tropical storm, Irene, I would think my time would be better spent trying to help those in need as opposed to posting a photo of a painting online. I think however, in the midst of the chaos of the floods here in Vermont, it is important to focus on the brighter days, the future and those moments which, in the challenges of tragedy, remind one that all shall be well and truly, time heels all wounds.
So I present this posting of a painting which I recently completed. When I see the piles of debris around the state and read of the heartbreak so many have faced after the floods, it is the scenes such as the one depicted in this painting which bring to me a sense of calm and peace, the thought; all shall be well, in time.
Maybe through viewing this painting you will be somehow lifted and hopefully reminded, all shall be well.

We are fine, the studio is fine and thankfully we sustained no damage to our home or property. Thank you for reading this post and for your keen interest in my work.

A Summer Stroll in Orwell, Vermont

We are upon the beautiful days of summer in Vermont, the days that seem to make the cold and bleakness of winter all worthwhile! I was out a few weeks ago exploring some areas around Orwell, Vermont and came upon this lovely scene. The light was coming through the heavy clouds in wonderful patterns just hitting the tops and edges of the trees. In the painting, I hoped to create a sense of mystery in the painting a sort of, "I wonder what is beyond the bend in the road" type mystery. The answer will have to come in another painting; there were a few jewels to be found indeed! Back to painting....and picking raspberries!

So here I am thinking, what am I going to work on next and blammo, it hits like a ton of bricks. We have a lake just south of town, a wonderful lake with a great history for the community. I often drive by and think, someday I should find some material from the lake from which to try and create some paintings. I guess that day has come. This is the first of some smaller studies I have done from various locations around the lake. This happens to be the section referred to as the little lake. A bit different for me, regarding moving water and the inclusion of boats and structures. It was fun. So, we'll see what else I can come up with.

A very influential teacher once said to me, "blue, green and yellow an interesting painting does not make." Well, living in Vermont, the "Green Mountain State" it is often hard to find a way out of all of the greens of summer. I try to vary the greens pushing a lot of red and umber into the mixes to warm them. Also, I try to have much variation with regard to warm and cool tones. With this particular painting, I realized what caught my attention was the interesting composition. So in addition to variation of green tones, warm and cool tones, compositional interest can also add some variety in an otherwise overly green painting. Regardless, this was a lot of fun to work on and I hope that I conveyed the scene as a warm, humid, late summer day in Vermont.

Rain, rain and more rain....makes for some great days in the studio! This is a piece I recently completed and I am pretty happy with the result. With each painting, I try to find some lesson which I might try to learn. This piece was a culmination of many of the lessons or ideas I have been working on as of late. Specifically, I wanted the distant hill to read as a hill with distance, but not far distance...so I did not push it completely to blue hues. Also, I have been working on some pieces where I tried to show the stones and rocks at the bottom of a creek bed. I am still playing around with this and will do some more pieces in a similar vein. Above all, while this is a fairy green scene, I tried to play up the difference between warm and cool greens and used some stronger colors in the shadows other than darker greens. It was good fun and I am looking forward to getting outside to put some of the lessons I have been working on in the studio, into practice. Guess its time to say, "rain, rain...go away!

While we are still waiting for spring to come its nice to be able to think about what might be ahead in the garden this summer. I spent an afternoon, a very cold and blustery afternoon, working on this simple peony in a glass jar. I really enjoyed the simple and graceful composition with strong lighting. I was so pleased with the result, I arranged a few more in a simple, but larger set up. Maybe I'll get to that this week.

Finally after what seems like months and months of winter, we are seeing some signs of spring. What a truly welcome sight! This painting was created from some sketches and oil studies I did late last summer in North Bennington, Vermont. I was at this location on the Mill River for several hours so I had a great chance to see the changing light. While the final version of this painting is very different from where I had initially started, I like the front lighting aspect to this painting and was quite happy with the overall feeling of the painting. I continue to enjoy working from my plein air studies...even if they were completed months prior.

Recently, we headed down to visit some friends in Massachusetts, taking in the Spring Bulb Show at Smith College. On rather cool and blustery March day, walking into the greenhouses at Smith, which were filled to overflowing with every spring bulb imaginable, was truly amazing. Once inside, seeing the colors, taking in the scents and the warmth of the atmosphere it did, indeed, serve as a reminder that spring will come, in spite of the snow which is still heavy on the ground. Painting summer scenes also helps to serve as a reminder that the cold days of winter will soon be replaced by the warm days of summer. This recent painting of a river in the foothills of the Adirondacks portrays a quiet summer evening just as the sun is starting to set. Some have called this a painting with a "spiritual feel." I look at it and think soon, I will see the grass in the yard, the flowers in the garden and the warmth of the summer sun. Guess I am ready for spring!

Breaking Light After a Morning Storm, oil on canvas, 18 x 24

After what seems to have been a very snowy and cold winter I must admit I am ready for some warmer weather. We have had however, some beautiful winter days. When I look back over photos of paintings I have completed in the last couple of years, I have been amazed at how many views of the Poultney River have been completed. I did a smaller plein air painting of this same spot last summer so this winter it was interesting to do a comparison of the area in a different season. There is something about the tree on the left that seems to balance the trees on the right and the day I was down there the light comimg through the trees seemed to give the affect that I was hoping to achieve. I like to paint winter scenes where the snow hangs heavy on the tress, I like use of back lighting in a painting, I liked the shapes of the trees and as you know, I enjoy painting water. All in all, I would say this was a painting that was great fun to pull together with many of the elements I truly enjoy painting. No matter how much fun I had doing the painting....no matter how much I like winter...I am still ready for the thermometer to reach 32 degrees.

After what seemed like weeks with little to no snow, the hope of a mild winter has indeed faded and given way to thoughts of a snow shovel, snow blower and yes, even spring. The snow is falling as I write and has been so for several hours. There is a softness to the tender grays I can see in the trees outside of my studio window. When the snow stops, the gray skies will hopefully give way to a clear, bright winter blue sky and the snow clinging to the trees will glisten in the bright light. This painting is somewhat related to the painting in my last post. It is of the Poultney River, but closer to Middletown Springs, Vermont. It depicts the bright sunny light radiating from the snow after a fierce storm. This painting was a true challenge, but thoroughly enjoyable. I hope you will enjoy it as well.

As part of a group of other snow paintings, this painting will be on display with the Bryan Memorial Gallery through February 27 in Jeffersonville, Vermont.

It has been a while since I last posted to my blog. Maybe posting more often should be a New Year's resolution. This painting was recently completed, from photos and sketches I made along a road in the hills around Middletown Springs, Vermont. I was trying capture the feeling of mid morning light coming through the trees on a warm summer day. The past few weeks have been somewhat busy. I won an award for a painting (my previous post) from the American Artists Professional League exhibition in New York as well as another painting which won the Arthur T. Hill Memorial Award for a landscape by an artist under the age of 45 from the 127 Annual Member's Exhibition of the Salmagundi Club, also in New York. I am truly honored by the receipt of this award. Finally, I wanted to post some information regarding some upcoming workshops. I will also have another oil painting workshop in the fall, information on that will follow. Have an enjoyable holiday season.

It has been a long while since I made my last post. It has been such an incredibly busy summer, I simply haven't taken the time to do so. Now, I have stacks of material to post, so I should be putting more up in the weeks to come. The summer started off with a great show at the Southern Vermont Arts Center, then a plein air class in Iowa. After the class in Iowa, I spent some time painting in Nova Scotia, spent some time in Dallas and then back home for an outdoor show. I just finished up with the North Bennington Plein Air Competition in Bennington, Vermont where one of my painting placed 2nd in the overall competition! I have participated with shows at the Guild of Boston Artists, the Bennington Center for the Arts and will have a painting in the National Exhibition of the American Impressionists Society. The painting in this post will be included in the 82nd Grand National Exhibition of the American Artists Professional League, to be held at the Salmagundi Club in New York in November. Wish me luck!

Frosty Morning Along the Poultney River, oil on canvas, 20 x 24

It has been a very long time since my last post to this blog. For the past several weeks I have been teaching a series of painting workshops in New Zealand; what a truly, lovely part of the world. I so enjoyed my time there and very much enjoyed every moment with the participants of my classes. Home for a few days to get the peas and lettuce planted and off to Michigan to teach another workshop. So this will truly be my last winter posting for a long while! This piece is again of my beloved Poultney River, only a bit further down the river than in some of my usual painting places. It had snowed the night before and the snow was heavy in the trees. The beautiful and soft morning light seemed to cast a pale lavender tone throughout the entire scene and I tried to balance the cool morning, heavy snow and the early morning light in very cool tones of lavenders and blues. I am so eager to get back out into the field and very eager to work on some paintings with the spring greens. The light is lovely this time of year with little to no humidity. Guess before I head out, I better plant a few more rows in the garden. Happy Spring!

Seems as though I have been burning the candle at both ends and maybe even in the middle last couple of weeks. I haven't had a chance to post as often as I would like. At any rate, after what seemed like a winter of very little snow, in this part of the country, we finally had a good storm a few weeks ago. I had an opportunity to get out on a warm sunny day and this piece is the result. It will be my one of my entries into a show co sponsored by the Bennington Center for the Arts, The Bryan Memorial Gallery and the Nature Conservancy. The area where I painted this piece is a lovely spot along the Poultney River, right near the New York border. I have just recently discovered the Nature Conservancy and am amazed by the concept of the preservation of natural habitat for plants, animals and for the enjoyment and respect by all.

Along a Winter Morning Walk, 16 x 20, oil on canvas

While the rest of the country has seen some record breaking snow falls, in this part of Vermont we have seen relatively little in recent weeks. Finally, a few days ago we had a nice snowfall. I had some time the morning after the big storm and armed with my camera and sketch book, I went out for about an hour or two and took a large amount of photos as well as made several sketches. While I love working outdoors, plein air, I think sometimes an approach of spending time in nature, observing, watching, recording with pencil and paper are equally as important. This painting is the result of some of these direct observations from that day. I had walked down a road towards the Poultney River and when I turned around I saw the beautiful light streaming through the snow laden trees.

With the winter winds howling outside, it's nice to be able to think of the warmer days ahead while working in the studio. I think this still life grew out of the thoughts of those days which seem so far away. With this painting, I wanted to convey a sense of warmth and comfort through some very common objects. As with all of my paintings, a sense of strong light direction in combination with lost edges was a focus.

There is something I find magical about a combination of blues and yellows. I never get tired of seeing this color combination nor do I get tired of working in these colors. In this setting I enjoyed adding in the elements of the white hydrangeas as well as the blue and white porcelain pieces. I think the brass added a nice touch and the variation of the reflective surface added some interest to the overall composition.

This piece was a lot of fun to work on; I enjoyed working with the glass in shadow and trying to push the white daisies into the background. During the hectic holiday season it was hard to grab a few moments to complete any larger work. I decided to work on a group of smaller still life paintings with similar objects only trying to come up with variations in composition. I enjoy painting copper and enjoyed adding in some dried corn as well as onions and garlic for textural variety. We finally have some snow so hopefully this week I will be able to head out and work a bit outside. Happy New Year.

I have been taking some time off as of late from teaching so its enabled me to work on a few more studio still life set ups. As with a previous post I am enjoying working with different lighting affects in a more controlled atmosphere. Returning to a favorite theme of copper and blue and white porcelain, I added in some chrysanthemums for additional color and texture. I thought the addition of some of the complementary blues gave a little zip to a predominately analogous painting. Even though the painting is in rather warm tones, which tend to be thought of as energetic and exciting, for some reason, I think this is a more restful painting. At any rate, it was a lot of fun to play around with. Enjoy.

This painting completed entirely on location earlier this fall was a true joy to paint. This is an area swimming hole on the Poultney River and the rock formations are truly amazing. I loved the early afternoon light in this area and hope sometime next year to paint in the same area only in a different season. I should think a fall setting of this same scene would be beautiful. I was pleased to find out that my painting, "Peonies and Hydrangeas" has won the Helen DeCozen Memorial Award for a Floral from the 81st Grand National Exhibition of the American Artists Professional League. The show will be at the Salmagundi Club, in New York until November 13th.

I always enjoy working with still life subjects. At the end of the season, these pansies were still looking up at me with bright happy faces so I thought it would be great to put them in a painting. The blue and white porcelain items were pieces I found in an antique shop while traveling in Australia a couple of years ago. I hope the painting makes you smile as well. This piece is one which was included in the November issue of American Art Collector magazine.

I realized it had been some time since I posted to my blog; I have been painting so much lately that it seems to have been put on the back burner. Now that the weather is turning cooler I thought I would spend some time sharing some of the pieces on which I have been working. In my last post, I mentioned spending some time working on several plein air painting, after having spent a wonderful week painting on Cape Ann. I have been feverishly working the past several weeks on more outdoor paintings and have thoroughly enjoyed this new direction. This painting was completed over a period of about three days working at the same location, about the same time of day each day and under the same lighting conditions. Truly a beautiful spot along the Poultney River, I plan to return to this area many times over the coming autumn season.

After spending last week on Cape Ann participating in an outdoor painting class conducted by David P. Curtis, I was so inspired by what I learned from David, I had to get home to try my hand at some of the things we discussed. This piece was painted about 90% out of doors going to the same location over a period of several days at the same time of day and with similar lighting conditions. It's rained pretty much all weekend so I added a few finishing touches from memory here in the studio. I rather like working this way and I think there will be many more plein air paintings completed in this manner in the weeks, months and hopefully years to come. It is amazing how much of an impact one instructor can have on your methods of working and seeing.

I've been spending a lot of time observing cattle in the field making many drawings and sketching trying to gain a better understanding of this great subject. There is a river not far from my home where the cattle go to drink and cool off at different times of the day. The theme of animals going for a drink at a pond, stream or river is a theme which has been repeated throughout art history and many artists, including myself will continue with their own impressions of this same idea. Maybe I am drawn to this idea simply out of a desire to observe and witness yet another aspect of tranquility in the natural world. Maybe its a desire to push myself as an artist to work with different subject matter. No matter the reasoning, the piece was pure enjoyment to pull together and I look forward to further exploration of the subject.

It feels good to be back into my oil work. Sometimes I think that it is perfectly fine to take a break from painting be it to work with other materials, another medium or simply to let the mind rest. During the last few weeks when I have been traveling, I spent some time thinking about subjects that I might like to include in my work. Living in an agricultural area of the state of Vermont I have the opportunity to observe many aspects of farm life. It seems natural to include cows in some of my landscape pictures. I enjoyed working with these guys and think I probably be working with several paintings that include this great subject in the coming weeks.

As I have been traveling and conducting some classes in New Zealand, I have not had an opportunity to post to my blog in a while. I completed this painting just before I left. Nature is an amazing thing; when I left Vermont, spring was just starting to unfold. Daffodils were up and poking their heads through the ground, the grass was just starting to turn green and even trees where just showing some signs of new growth. Here in the southern hemisphere, its fall..the colors are beautiful and the air is cool and clean. This year will be an extra treat with two fall seasons to enjoy! This painting was completed after a feeble attempt at the same scene. Its amazing that sometimes just a second chance at the same scene can produce much more pleasing results.

After a long winter its always a welcome site to see signs of spring. I have been hearing the song of the red-winged black bird in the last couple of days and have even seen a few in our feeder, for me a true sign of spring. How nice to be able to hear the song of one of my favorite birds. It feels as though one can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they have made it through winter. Soon the beauty of summer will be upon us.

This piece shows the grays of winter along side some of the new spring grasses along the river bank. The sun is warm yet the rushing water is incredibly cold. This painting is of one of my favorite trees along the river.

I was needing to pull together a painting which will be used for an advertisement later this summer for a show in which I will be participating. In going through my files and sketches I came upon materials I obtained last summer while out and about. I am enjoying painting water immensely and think I will probably be adding this element into my work quite a bit in the future. Now with the still cold temps and melting snow, its hard to believe that in a few short months the pastures, hills and trees will be cloaked in verdant hues. "Hillside Sugar House" oil on board, 8 x 10

About this time of year the area public radio station starts asking listeners to email the station with various "signs of spring." After a very long winter everyone is itching to get outside now that the temps are not as cold as several weeks ago. Its a great time of year to go bird watching, snowshoeing, skiing or to even to tap a few maple trees. For me, the signs of spring are the first Robbins, melting snow and collecting maple sap to be boiled into maple syrup. Around the area of Vermont where I live, another sign of spring is the billowing smoke and steam which can be seen coming from the local sugar maker's sugar house. It's an long standing tradition in Vermont to make maple syrup and a sure sign that spring is on the way. This painting is of a local sugar house; the small, often dilapidated buildings offer wonderful character and subject matter, especially this time of year.

As mentioned in a previous post, I am spending some time teaching a painting workshop on the Georgia coast. The nice weather here has inspired me to begin thinking ahead a few months when it will be time to plant the garden at home in Vermont. I painted this piece after clipping a few late season blooms and tossing them in an old "Ball" canning jar belonging to my great-grandmother. I enjoyed painting this piece rather quickly trying to retain a sense of freshness and spontaneity.

I have been teaching some workshops on the coast of Georgia as of late and I realized I hadn't posted anything to my blog in a week or so. I have always liked this piece...rather a joint effort. I borrowed the old copper jug from a friend and the apples came from the tree belonging to a neighbor. It was great fun to pull the piece together and they were quited impressed to know they had played a small part in the set up. Guess its all part of sharing and the creative process.

"Along a Path on an Early Fall Day" oil on canvas on board, 12 x 16

Many of the old railway lines in the state of Vermont have been turned into a series of trails and paths for walking, biking and horseback riding. I am fortunate to live near one such path and spend a lot of time on this trail at various times of the year. Last fall, I fell in love with a tree that had turned a brilliant orange yellow while all around other trees were just beginning to change their colors for the coming season. These colors are just a bit lighter in value for me and I enjoyed working in a lighter palette for this piece.

Earlier this past fall, I spent some time at this pond near my home, working on a small outdoor sketch. I fell in love with the scene and knew that I would want to work up something on a larger scale. As I have been traveling, teaching some painting workshops, I haven't had a chance to post as much as I would like. I completed this painting of the coastal area, "Marginal Way" at Ogunquit, ME, just before I left. During the cold days of winter it's nice to be able to spend some time painting the warmer days of summer! The sun was just beginning to set and the waves hitting the rocks, some which were in the shadows, others tipped by touches of late afternoon light made for an awesome scene. Maybe next time I should try this in a large 30 x 40 format!

"Late Afternoon in Winter"

As mentioned in previous posts, before moving to New England, I always imagined winter as dark and gray. The clarity of light in winter never ceases to amaze me. In this painting of the Poultney River, I wanted to convey the feeling of late afternoon light, which was clear and warm, hitting the dormant trees while the snow on the ground in the shadows is still cold. Its almost as if nature is giving the trees one last bit of warmth before the long, cold night ahead.

As it has been so cold lately, I haven't really had the opportunity to get outside to do some painting. It's been nice to work on a still life in a slightly different direction than other still life paintings. I was aiming for a sense of strong light direction and drama in this piece. I also wanted to express strong contrast in textures from the translucent quality of the porcelain, reflective nature of the brass container, the fabric and then the textural elements of the peonies. I think every painting can be a learning experience and a building block to the next piece. I think, in part, that is the draw to the act of creating.

"New Mexico Reflections" oil on canvas, 30 x 24

I finally finished this painting for yet another entry into one of the National exhibitions coming up this year. As I was nearing completion, I realized that I had probably been working on this painting for probably more than a year, at least in my mind. Growing up in New Mexico, I have always loved the late September days moving into early October. Those days, the last of the wild sunflowers bloom by the roadsides, the wild asters start popping up here and there; even the chamisa provides the landscape with a carpet of yellow. Its a beautiful time of year. I could envision a painting with bright sunflowers and wild asters against a back drop of a Navajo rug and maybe a piece of pueblo pottery. So began the quest for the items to include in the painting. I found the pottery here in Vermont, the rug at another shop, the blue jug somewhere else. Once the elements in the painting were together, I actually began working on the composition in my studio. I have no idea if the painting will make it into this show, I certainly hope so. No matter the outcome though, the learning and sheer enjoyment of putting this piece together is the true reward.

Having grown up in New Mexico, I was not fully prepared, on some levels for a New England winter. I think, in my mind, I had an idea that it snowed, everyday, was cold, everyday and that the sun did not shine from late November until sometime in mid-May. While there are many dark and very cold days of winter...it was minus 7 this morning, my initial impression was quite false. There are many beautiful bright and clear winter days after all! It is not always that cold it can be quite warm walking around on a bright winter day. This is one tiny portion of many of the discoveries now living in my adopted Vermont. The day I painted this piece was cold but warm, in the sun. The warm, late afternoon light streaming through the trees created a beautiful moment and I hope through this little painting you can feel the warmth of the winter sun on an otherwise very cold day.

In the last week or so I have been feverishly trying to complete some paintings that will be entries into a couple of upcoming National exhibitions. I have not painted a seascape in some time and I was really itching to get back to this type of work. It was a fun experience to compare this seascape with some others that I completed in years past. Amazing how one's style or painting temperament can change. In this painting, which is of the Massachusetts coast, near Magnolia, MA, I wanted to focus on a very clear and strong light direction. I spent a lot of time on this piece loosing edges and doing a lot of blending...a bit odd for me, but I liked the effect. So, wish me luck. One never knows about these shows, but I think its a great time to push a little to really try to do something different and maybe with very fine-tuned senses. This is one of my entries for the show Salon International at the Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio.

"Covered Bridge at Pittsford, VT" 16x20, oil on canvas, framed

WHen I moved to Vermont six years ago, I was immediately captured by the charms of the state. What I thought only existed in postcards, actually was part of my new life. I have fallen in love with the area time and time again and am always "wowed" by the landscpae, history; simply the "ethos" of Vermont. With the change in the area of the country where I lived, I have also made changes in my work from subject matter to changes in palette. Such is the case with this painting of the covered bridge at Pittsford, VT. The most widely photographed bridge in the state of Vermont, it made a wonderful subject for a wintertime painting. Some would look at a paintings such as this as trite, it is however a part of the world in which I live and do my work. A covered bridge evokes a feeling of nostaligia, romance or of times gone by. In this world of non-stop, frenectic activity to pause for a moment to be nostaligic about a place or a time might not be so bad afterall.

While out one day looking for an area to spend some time painting, I came upon this Sycamore by the Poultney River. It was a very cold, but somewhat bright morning where the snow had a particular feeling of icy cold and the frost hung heavy in the trees and bushes. It was an interesting challenge trying to paint the light bark of the sycamore while retaining that "frosty" feeling, as well as a strong light pattern. A lot to think about in a small area, but fun trying to achieve. I think this area will require more attention in the following weeks of winter.

After spending some time on some smaller paintings and some commissions, I was chomping at the bit to work on something larger. Earlier this year, when I was out painting, I came upon this scene heading home. It was one of the moments when I slammed on my breaks in the car; a "this is it" moment. I was wanting to create a sense of luminosity in the clouds with a feeling of back lighting coming through the trees on this early fall afternoon. It had been raining that morning, so there were a few puddles here and there. While a challenge, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed every brush stroke in this piece.

For some reason I tend to like to do the bulk of my outdoor painting in the wintertime. An artist friend of mine says I pick a rough time of year to start such work, but that is what I enjoy. I like the diversity and subtlety of light that can be witnessed during any given winter season. The day I did this study happened to be quiet, overcast and gray day. With a closer look, I noticed that it was not a gray day, but a soft gray violet day with wonderful silver light.

The miracle of the changing seasons never ceases to amaze me. After passing from verdant summer gently into the brilliant colors of autumn we are now at the beginning of winter in New England. I painted this location earlier this year in the rich greens of summer. I recently visited this local orchard and the area was cloaked in the colors of fall. It was a joy to paint this same area with a different palette. Maybe when the snows arrive, I will make another trip over to the orchard to see what the pond has in store for me then. No matter the season, I am always thankful that I get to do everyday, what I love.

I guess after having returned from teaching a workshop I was still pretty excited about painting sunflowers, so I decided to put together another still life this time with a more autumnal theme. The copper pot has become one of my favorite still life objects and I am sure it will appear in more paintings in the coming years. I received word the other evening that my painting, "Road Home" had been accepted into the 125th Annual Member's Exhibition of the Salmagundi Club in New York. In addition,the painting received the Arthur T. Hill Memorial Award for a landscape by an artist under 45 years of age. It was a wonderful surprise and I am still walking a few inches off the ground.

In previous posts I shared studies completed in class during a recent teaching trip. I wanted to share our larger project in this posting. We had great fun setting up the still life, as a class. As a group we came up with a set up that seemed to have great painting opportunities from all angles. In fact, walking around the room it was fun to see the different angles of the set up as portrayed in each of the student's paintings. I think my painting is just about finished, I may tweak it a bit here or there when I get it home. The whole class was a great experience and I am grateful to the students and to my host for giving me a wonderful opportunity. Good to be home though; from the looks of the weather outside, I might be painting snow very soon!

As mentioned in a previous post, I have been in Iowa teaching a series of paintings workshops. This is another example of one of the exercises we completed before working with the larger class project. We had been working in black and white with a small still life, with a focus on matching values of objects with tones of pigment. The next step in this process was to use two complementary colors, in this case yellow and violet, to create a small study. In addition to pure color we mixed semi neutral tones and some lighter and darker values with the addition of white and black. It was amazing to see the variation of colors that could be mixed. The concept of this exercise was to try to gain an understanding that value and the combination of values help to create form. In addition, I wanted to help the students experiment with the concept that color in its pure form has a value (light and dark.) They quickly realized that maintaining good contrast was the key to making a successful study using two colors. I encouraged the students to note that the semi neutral mixes had a warm and a cool side which when placed in the painting helped to establish a feeling of depth as the warmer tones advanced in the painting and cooler tones helped areas to recede in the piece. The process was a challenge but it helped to reinforce the idea that color can be anything as long as its reasonable and that a painting can be successful and interesting using a very limited palette.

I have just finished a painting workshop in Iowa and I thought I might share some of our class projects. We spent two days working on smaller studies and excercizes before tackling our larger still life set up. In one of our studies we worked up a small painting using only black and white. It was a great opportunity to study values and and how the combination of values help to create form; it is also a great chance to spend some time focusing on contrast. On another study we worked up a still life set up using only two complimentary colors, semi neutral mixes, black and white. The painting included in this post was simply a warm-up exercise to demonstrate how I would approach a floral subject. I was pretty happy with the end result especially since the study was completed in 15 minutes. My next few postings will include some of the other studies from this class.

This piece is another of plein air studies from earlier this fall. I loved the trunk and branches of this old maple located at the edge of a pond on the property of a friend of mine. The leaves were falling as I was painting, only a few really remained. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was quickly setting on that area of the pond with just a few lights hitting the tree here and there. As with all of my outdoor studies, I think there might be some information contained in the piece which might find its way into a larger piece. Above all, now that the days are cooler, I can think of no better way to experience the wonder of the fall season than working outdoors.

I went apple picking a couple of weeks ago; the day could not have been better. It was a beautiful fall day with a light crisp breeze and bright sunshine. I have thoroughly enjoyed painting several apple studies this fall this one included. I am not sure why I am so drawn to this subject; they are always a challenge to paint...who knows, maybe that is the draw. I always tell my students that painting fruit is like painting a portrait. Each piece of fruit has slight variations which are unique, they have a character and a life all their own. I always try to have a few leaves in my apple studies as well;they have a character and sense of humor in the way they twist and curl. It may sound strange, but I don't want to paint just a piece of fruit, I want to paint the bright clear day, the crisp air, the fun of picking apples with a loved one. This is a lofty goal in a piece of canvas 5 x 7 inches.

On a day like today, with the skies dark and dreary, late fall winds howling outside and rain, which will likely turn to snow tonight, pelting the window, it is hard to believe that just a few short weeks ago the sky was a brilliant blue against a carpet of yellows, oranges and reds of fall foliage. I was looking forward to working with these autumnal colors a bit more, however I am wondering if I need to dig out my snow boots and prepare for some winter outdoor painting? No matter the season, painting is always a joy. How could I be so lucky to be able to partake of such daily joy?

Last week, while out "leaf peeping" with another artist friend, we came upon this old pond on a road outside the village where I live. Painting outside is something I do enjoy but found that being with other artists makes the experience that much more fun. Its great to be able to share ideas, talk about art or even bounce ideas off of one another while working on the same subject; no two people will ever see the same scene in the same way. Now the leaves have almost completely fallen and this area will be soon cloaked in Winter's blanket of snow.

"Dazzling Fall Colors," oil on board, 8 x 10

It seems to most folks, around this part of Vermont, this year's fall color extravaganza has been one of the best in many years. I would agree. The color is always amazing this time of year, but it seems this year, more so than others. While I paint almost every day, I am not a huge fan of outdoor painting. I try to balance my studio work though with some plein air work as well as photographing and sketching the scenes and places which inspire me. I think the individual has to decide which is the best working method for them and then follow that path with diligence. This painting however, was painted on location, almost in its entirety. The past few days have been exceedingly bright and warm so it made for some wonderful working time outside. Over the next couple posts, I will share some of my outdoor attempts. As with all of my outdoor work, I think these small paintings/sketches will, along with my photos and pencil sketches, become useful aids in larger more involved paintings. I like though, the freshness of these smaller paintings, not to mention the feelings and the memories I have of working on these pieces on one of the most beautiful of fall days.

I completed this painting of a lane along the Hoosick River on the Vermont, New York border several weeks ago. As I was looking at it the other day I was thinking to myself that many variations of this same scene could be completed. From different lighting effects to seasonal changes, I think it will be a great wintertime project to revisit this same area to see just how many painting could be completed using this basic compositional layout.

After returning from a teaching trip to Phoenix, Arizona I was greeted in Vermont by some of the early fall colors. I was out one day earlier this week and came upon this scene and knew immediately that this could make a great painting. The late afternoon light was filtering through some of the tall pines casting shadows on the pond allowing strong lights to hit some of the distant brilliant yellow-orange trees. The water was perfectly still on this crisp, early autumn day. As with many of these smaller studies, I think this setting will find its way into a larger painting in the not so distant future. Incidentally, this painting will be part of the "Fresh Paint" Auction sponsored by the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, VT. After a ten day teaching trip to Phoenix, Arizona, it was nice to return to the early fall season of Vermont. The leaves are turning and autumn is putting on her cloak of brilliant colors. These gourds and mums were casually spread on a table and placed in a favorite copper cup and the pictured still life is the result. This time of year in New England is always bittersweet. The beautiful greens of summer have faded, the garden has finished producing wonderful fruits and vegetables and soon the cold temps of Winter will be here. This painting is of a late summer maple tree not far from my home. It is huge and has an interesting trunk structure. It has stood for years through the changing seasons, quite majestically, I might add. Thus the name, "Majestic Maple."

Another exploration of wild apples and copper! I am not sure why I am so drawn to this subject, but I never become tired of working with various textures, reflective surfaces and natural objects. Ultimately, I think my love of this subject is due in part to my enthusiasm for the fall season ahead. We are coming into a magical time in New England with the beauty of the foliage, cool days and bright blue skies. No fall day would be complete without a trip to the local apple orchard for an afternoon of picking. What better way to end the day than painting a few apples along with treasured objects. Enjoy!

This is the time of year when the vegetable garden begins to slow up and the leaves start to show thier touches of fall color. The flower garden also begins to fade to prepare for the winter ahead. I love this time of year and can not wait for the fall colors to begin. Its a time of year when one can sense the passage of time. I pulled this painting together from a few remaining flowers from the garden and some freshly picked wild apples. I liked the color combinations as well as the combinations of textures with the fabric and the metal of the copper pot. I was so pleased by the setting that I decided to do a second painting in a larger format. Maybe next time I will try some pumpkins and gourds...hmmm, ideas, ideas.

The Station Bridge, located in Northfield, Vermont was built by an unknown craftsman in 1872. It spans the Dog River and is one of three bridges on the same road all within a half mile. One can see two bridges, this one included, in the same view, the only place in New England where this can be noticed. The name “Station” came from the presence of a nearby railroad depot. It’s a charming area and a must on any fall foliage tour through the state of Vermont. Maybe sometime, I will have to try a painting of the two bridges in one view, and during fall foliage season; it’s around the corner for sure.

Living in rural Vermont has provided me with a wealth of information and material for my paintings. While I tend to work with still life and landscape subjects, working with architectural elements is somewhat new to me. I have thoroughly enjoyed painting covered bridges, barns and old houses and am looking forward to a lifetime of painting and enjoyment of such subjects. This barn and other outbuildings are located near my home. The barn faces west and has had years of exposure to the sun and elements. The paint or stain is almost completely worn giving a great weathered feeling to the building. The sides however, mostly in shadow, retain their typical barn red. I painted this scene using fall colors, but I am sure I will return to this area as I can visualize the setting in all seasons and weather conditions.

As mentioned in another post, I have been surprised this summer at the abundance of wild apple trees scattered throughout the hills and meadows in the area of Vermont where I live. The beautiful fruit sparkles in the early autumnal sun, attracting birds and dear for a feast of these summer gifts. I love the colors of the apples and in this setting I particularly liked the combination of the colors of the apples with the porcelain cup.

As this blog progresses, one of my goals is to present paintings from time to time that are a stretch for me; a piece whereby artistically, possibly in color, brushwork, concept, anything that might be a bit out of the norm for me, I pushed a bit. This piece happens to be the case. It was a demonstration at a recent art festival and when I got it home, I liked elements but I was struck by an over abundance of "green." I let the piece dry up a bit and scumbled color over the piece not really trying to get a representative color, but rather cool color in the shadows, warms in the lights. Blue might not have been in the scene, but when I wanted to emphasize "shadow" I pushed the blue and so forth. I wanted to make this as impressionistic as I could muster. Who knows, maybe I will go down this road more often... the journey was pure fun.

We are heading into a favorite time of year here in Vermont, and especially so for me personally. I love the coolness of the night air, the dry days and the warm sun. Trees all over this area are beginning to make their transformation from the bight greens of summer to the autumnal yellows, russets and browns. This year it seems I have noticed more wild apple trees by the roadsides than ever before. These trees are often very heavily laden with fruit that sparkles in the autumn sun. I love the combination of reds and yellow greens of the apples along with the often ragged and scrappy leaves. I look forward to working with this subject until it will be time to work with the more familiar autumnal pumpkins and other gourds.

The association of the maple tree with New England and Vermont in particular, is a longstanding association. In winter, sap buckets can be seen in many areas of the state hanging off of the dormant, winter trees collecting precious sap to be processed into maple syrup; a sure sign spring is on the way. In the fall, these trees are a blaze with colors from bright yellows to brilliant reds, depending on the variety of the tree. In summer, the maple tree provides unparalleled shade and beauty to the variant fields of the countryside. This tree, not far from my home, begged to be painted. I tried in this small format to convey the feeling of the sheer magnitude of this beautiful tree so vital to our environment.

This is one of the small paintings I have been working on as of late. They have been a real joy to work with, even at their small size. This particular painting is a scene from a local orchard, Hicks Orchard. Its a great place to go blueberry picking in the summer and apple picking in the fall. The pond on the property is a wonderful spot to sit and rest after several hours of picking.

Here is another small painting from the recent trip up the coast of New England. It is hard to express through paint and brushstrokes, the joy I felt in experiencing the beauty of this area. The light was incredibly rich and warm and the waves crashing against the rocks; truly an amazing scene. Maybe through these paintings the viewer might be able to sense my love of this area.

As mentioned in a previous post, I had an opportunity to spend a little time on the coast of Maine, at Ogunquit. I was so impressed and inspired by the waves, the gorgeous rock formations and the late afternoon light, it did not take long for me to begin working on a few small pieces. This is the first of several I have completed. Its always a challenge to work in a small format with a subject so vast and awesome as the ocean. Possibly this winter I will begin some larger scale paintings of the sea; what better way to spend the cold winter days of Vermont than thinking and reflecting on the warm summer days by the sea.

This time of year in Vermont is a wonderful time. There are many outdoor festivals and events; every weekend seems to be crowded with events. Home gardens are brimming with all of the seasonal delights and late summer flowers begin putting on their show. Soon will be the time to think about harvest, putting the flowers beds to rest for the long winter ahead and settling in for cool crisp autumnal days.

The painting presented here shows a grouping of these late summer flowers. The sunflowers are the focus, but there are some white gladiolas playing a supporting role in the composition. These flowers were grown locally and were just sitting there at the farm stand saying they needed to be painted. They were leftovers from some wedding bouquets. Maybe the fact that they were leftovers made me want to put them in an arrangement where they are truly the stars of the show. Enjoy

After having spent a week on Cape Cod I have become more inspired than ever to continue with my seascape work. I have fallen in love with the marshes and wetlands around the Cape, not to mention the gracious skies. We enjoyed a day trip to Martha's Vineyard and I enjoyed having the opportunity to see the work of some very favorite and admired artists of National renown.

New Beginnings

After having written that title, I wonder how many new blogs are started each day with the same title. Oh well, at this point I do not have time to give that much thought, so I will forge ahead.

My plan for this blog is to spend some time adding photos of new work several times a week as an additional marketing resource . I hope anyone who might read this will take some time to add thoughts or comments about the work.

The painting is an oil titled, "Late Summer's Light." Living in Vermont, with such long winters, the end of summer is always bitter sweet. The warm days are over, yet the colors of fall are soon on the way and soon, cold winter days. I love this time of year as the trees teed to take on a yellowish cast to the foliage, a sure sign that change is on the way. I hope you enjoy the painting.
