A View North, Middletown Springs, VT oil on canvas 16 x 20

Summer is truly upon us here in VT. With this painting I wanted to focus on the beauty of the distant hillside. I wanted to convey a feeling of a warm, New England summer day. With many more days such as these, I'll be ready for winter!

"September Afternoon at the Pond" oil on canvas, 20 x 24

This piece was completed earlier this spring using photos and other reference materials I had gathered during the fall season. The pond featured in this painting is located on a friend's property and it was great to visit the area many times through the fall and into the winter to watch nature's graceful changes. I hope to get over there again soon to see what early spring has in store at this favorite painting spot. This painting is part of the exhibition, "Salon International" now on view at the Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, TX. Please contact the gallery for further information and to see the beautiful work which comprises this exhibition. www.greenhousegallery.com

"The Promise of Spring" oil on canvas on board, 12 x 16

After a long winter its always a welcome site to see signs of spring. I have been hearing the song of the red-winged black bird in the last couple of days and have even seen a few in our feeder, for me a true sign of spring. How nice to be able to hear the song of one of my favorite birds. It feels as though one can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they have made it through winter. Soon the beauty of summer will be upon us.

This piece shows the grays of winter along side some of the new spring grasses along the river bank. The sun is warm yet the rushing water is incredibly cold. This painting is of one of my favorite trees along the river.

Tomorrow, Monday April 6 at 2:00pm CST, I will be the guest of Kim McCool on her online radio broadcast, “Discover the Heart of Art with Kim McCool.” Kim is an excellent porcelain artist and has recently developed this great program. "Discover the Heart of Art with Kim McCool" is a bi-weekly show where McCool interviews artists of all kinds - from classic art, such as painting and sculpture to writing, music and choreography discuss the heart of their art. This art talk show is unique and informative. McCool and her guest talk about what inspires the art, where the love of the art comes from and how listeners can discover the heart of art.
If people are not able to listen to the live broadcast, they can go to McCool’s website (http://www.kimmccool.com) and either download the podcast for later listening or listen to the replay on their computer. The broadcasts will be archived. Please join us.

"Hillside Sugar House" oil on board, 8 x 10

About this time of year the area public radio station starts asking listeners to email the station with various "signs of spring." After a very long winter everyone is itching to get outside now that the temps are not as cold as several weeks ago. Its a great time of year to go bird watching, snowshoeing, skiing or to even to tap a few maple trees. For me, the signs of spring are the first Robbins, melting snow and collecting maple sap to be boiled into maple syrup. Around the area of Vermont where I live, another sign of spring is the billowing smoke and steam which can be seen coming from the local sugar maker's sugar house. It's an long standing tradition in Vermont to make maple syrup and a sure sign that spring is on the way. This painting is of a local sugar house; the small, often dilapidated buildings offer wonderful character and subject matter, especially this time of year.

"Along a Path on an Early Fall Day" oil on canvas on board, 12 x 16

Many of the old railway lines in the state of Vermont have been turned into a series of trails and paths for walking, biking and horseback riding. I am fortunate to live near one such path and spend a lot of time on this trail at various times of the year. Last fall, I fell in love with a tree that had turned a brilliant orange yellow while all around other trees were just beginning to change their colors for the coming season. These colors are just a bit lighter in value for me and I enjoyed working in a lighter palette for this piece.
