This piece was completed earlier this spring using photos and other reference materials I had gathered during the fall season. The pond featured in this painting is located on a friend's property and it was great to visit the area many times through the fall and into the winter to watch nature's graceful changes. I hope to get over there again soon to see what early spring has in store at this favorite painting spot. "The Promise of Spring" oil on canvas on board, 12 x 16

After a long winter its always a welcome site to see signs of spring. I have been hearing the song of the red-winged black bird in the last couple of days and have even seen a few in our feeder, for me a true sign of spring. How nice to be able to hear the song of one of my favorite birds. It feels as though one can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they have made it through winter. Soon the beauty of summer will be upon us.

This piece shows the grays of winter along side some of the new spring grasses along the river bank. The sun is warm yet the rushing water is incredibly cold. This painting is of one of my favorite trees along the river.

"Standing Tall" oil on canvas 11 x 14

In a previous post, I mentioned that it was maple sugarin' time in Vermont. With the coming of spring, I guess I felt compelled to complete one more painting in fall colors. This maple tree stood out like a flame against the cool, gray blue sky.

"Summer on the Poultney River" oil on mounted canvas, 18 x 24

I was needing to pull together a painting which will be used for an advertisement later this summer for a show in which I will be participating. In going through my files and sketches I came upon materials I obtained last summer while out and about. I am enjoying painting water immensely and think I will probably be adding this element into my work quite a bit in the future. Now with the still cold temps and melting snow, its hard to believe that in a few short months the pastures, hills and trees will be cloaked in verdant hues. I guess, like everyone else here, I am ready for spring as well.

"Hillside Sugar House" oil on board, 8 x 10

About this time of year the area public radio station starts asking listeners to email the station with various "signs of spring." After a very long winter everyone is itching to get outside now that the temps are not as cold as several weeks ago. Its a great time of year to go bird watching, snowshoeing, skiing or to even to tap a few maple trees. For me, the signs of spring are the first Robbins, melting snow and collecting maple sap to be boiled into maple syrup. Around the area of Vermont where I live, another sign of spring is the billowing smoke and steam which can be seen coming from the local sugar maker's sugar house. It's an long standing tradition in Vermont to make maple syrup and a sure sign that spring is on the way. This painting is of a local sugar house; the small, often dilapidated buildings offer wonderful character and subject matter, especially this time of year.

"Summer Pickin" 10 x 8 oil on canvas

As mentioned in a previous post, I am spending some time teaching a painting workshop on the Georgia coast. The nice weather here has inspired me to begin thinking ahead a few months when it will be time to plant the garden at home in Vermont. I painted this piece after clipping a few late season blooms and tossing them in an old "Ball" canning jar belonging to my great-grandmother. I enjoyed painting this piece rather quickly trying to retain a sense of freshness and spontaneity.

Apples and Copper, oil on board, 18 x 24

I have been teaching some workshops on the coast of Georgia as of late and I realized I hadn't posted anything to my blog in a week or so. I have always liked this piece...rather a joint effort. I borrowed the old copper jug from a friend and the apples came from the tree belonging to a neighbor. It was great fun to pull the piece together and they were quited impressed to know they had played a small part in the set up. Guess its all part of sharing and the creative process.
