It feels good to be back into my oil work. Sometimes I think that it is perfectly fine to take a break from painting be it to work with other materials, another medium or simply to let the mind rest. During the last few weeks when I have been traveling, I spent some time thinking about subjects that I might like to include in my work. Living in an agricultural area of the state of Vermont I have the opportunity to observe many aspects of farm life. It seems natural to include cows in some of my landscape pictures. I enjoyed working with these guys and think I probably be working with several paintings that include this great subject in the coming weeks.

As it has been so rainy lately, and a bit soggy to get outside, I have been doing some studio work. I enjoy setting up casual still lives of everyday objects and this was no exception. I thought just a simple arrangement of the copper shape an apple and some grapes would make a nice little painting and a great, Mid Day Snack.

William Baffin Roses, oil on canvas, 16 x 20

After spending time this spring in Australia, New Zealand and most recently in Edinburgh, Scotland, it's nice to come home to full blown summer in Vermont. These roses grow along the fence in our front yard and this year the blooms were spectacular. Was a nice greeting from the garden after being away for so long.

As mentioned in my last post, I have been traveling and teaching in New Zealand. Having "crossed the ditch" (the Tasmin Sea) as they say, I am now in South Australia where I will continue some classes in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. It truly is a lovely part of the world. I completed this painting of a pond near my home just before leaving on the trip.

"First Day of Spring" 12 x 16, oil on mounted canvas

As I have been traveling and conducting some classes in New Zealand, I have not had an opportunity to post to my blog in a while. I completed this painting just before I left. Nature is an amazing thing; when I left Vermont, spring was just starting to unfold. Daffodils were up and poking their heads through the ground, the grass was just starting to turn green and even trees where just showing some signs of new growth. Here in the southern hemisphere, its fall..the colors are beautiful and the air is cool and clean. This year will be an extra treat with two fall seasons to enjoy! This painting was completed after a feeble attempt at the same scene. Its amazing that sometimes just a second chance at the same scene can produce much more pleasing results.

"September Afternoon at the Pond" oil on canvas, 20 x 24

This piece was completed earlier this spring using photos and other reference materials I had gathered during the fall season. The pond featured in this painting is located on a friend's property and it was great to visit the area many times through the fall and into the winter to watch nature's graceful changes. I hope to get over there again soon to see what early spring has in store at this favorite painting spot. "The Promise of Spring" oil on canvas on board, 12 x 16

After a long winter its always a welcome site to see signs of spring. I have been hearing the song of the red-winged black bird in the last couple of days and have even seen a few in our feeder, for me a true sign of spring. How nice to be able to hear the song of one of my favorite birds. It feels as though one can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they have made it through winter. Soon the beauty of summer will be upon us.

This piece shows the grays of winter along side some of the new spring grasses along the river bank. The sun is warm yet the rushing water is incredibly cold. This painting is of one of my favorite trees along the river.
